Why is it so difficult to get this browser to simply open new tabs to google?

more options

Google is set as the home page under general settings, Google is set in the browsernewtab.url, Include suggested sites is de-selected & this thing still opens every new tab to that annoying damn screen with the tiles all over it. This ignorance started once fire fox was updated (41.0) prior to that it did exactly as i wanted it to? i will never understand how completing this task in one browser IE is simply a matter of typing it in to the "Options". Where as with your browser it takes a squirrelly act of God to do something so simple. What gives?

Chosen solution

Fortunately, divine intervention is not required.

Firefox 41 no longer uses the browser.newtab.url setting in about:config because it was constantly attacked by malware. Starting in Firefox 41, you need an add-on to change the new tab page.

Here are some options (I learn of more all the time):

  • If you already use the Classic Theme Restorer extension: There is an option somewhere (!) in its extensive settings dialogs to select a different new tab page.

Setting up New Tab Override

After installing this extension, you need to use its Options page to set the desired new tab page (instead of using about:config).

Open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Cmd+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the right side, find New Tab Override and click its Options button. (See first screen shot attached.)

Depending on the height of your screen, you may need to scroll down to enter the desired address into the form. (See second screen shot attached.) For example:

  • Page thumbnails (default) => about:newtab
  • Blank tab => about:blank
  • Built-in Firefox home page => about:home
  • Any other page => full URL to the page

Then tab or click away from that form field and you can test using Ctrl+t.

Success?

Once you have it set the way you want, you can close the Add-ons page (or use the Back button to return to the Extensions list from that Options page).

Yes, I understand your frustration. But Firefox is different from Intenet Explorer. Here is the procedure you need to follow on firefox. 1. Type "about:config" in the address bar and hit enter. 2. It shows a warning message. Click on I'll be careful. 3. in the search box: type "about" it will show all the matching properties. browse.newtab.url by default the value is set to about:blank right click on it and click on modify and change it to the desired url, in your case: google.com This should solve your query. Now onwards you should be able to open google.com every time when u click new tab button.

@ jscher2000 Yes! Thank you! All I did was install the plug in and it worked immediately, I didn't even have to do the Tab Override setup. Thanks for your divine intervention!

@OpenSourceLover - While I appreciate your reply, you must have missed the part where I mentioned "Google is set in the browsernewtab.url"... As stated in the solution from jscher2000, a plug-in is now needed for this task. Thank You.

Note that you can expect the same for the home page.

Done with this browser. I thought IE was bad, Firefox is a damn joke between its constant updates, crashing "oops that was embarrassing" BS & sticky unresponsiveness... Enough is enough Anyone that uses this pile is a fool. Welcome back IE.
