My Yahoo Mail is "forcing" me to switch to Firefox by turning my features in basic. Is Firefox compatible with windows 7 for home and students?

Hi, I have a Yahoo Mail account since many years. Now they have turned my account into Basic saying that my IE9 is not supported anymore and they are "forcing" me to download Firefox otherwise I have to go on with the Basic Mail. Is Firefox compatible with windows 7 for home and studens? If I download firefox what will it affect all the files I have on my computer? Will it affect my windows mail? Thank you for a quick answer.

As far as I know, Firefox runs on all different variations of Windows 7. Firefox runs better with a lot of memory, so if your system has 2GB of memory, you may be limited in the number of windows and tabs you can open simultaneously before things bog down compared with a system that has 4GB of memory.

As a web browser, you can set Firefox to be your default program to open web pages and links. If you do that, then some icons may change, for example, links to web pages may change to a Firefox icon. Also, Firefox has a built-in PDF viewer, but you can still use Adobe Reader or another program to read PDFs if you like.

Do you use Windows Live Mail or another stand-alone program to get mail? Firefox won't be involved with that because such programs retrieve mail directly, not using your browser. But if you make Firefox your default handler for links, when you click a link in the mail program, it will open in Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

Some other things:

(1) Beware of random download links in search engine results. You can get Firefox here (scroll down to your preferred language):

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

(2) I'm sure after starting Firefox the first time you'll have a lot of questions. The program should give you a little mini-product tour, and you can use our support articles to learn more: https://support.mozilla.org/products/firefox

(3) You should install IE11 because there still are some sites that use proprietary technologies and do not display in Firefox, such as Windows update
