Did you reset/refresh Firefox and have created a new profile?

When you reset/refresh Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported. The current profile folder will be moved to an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop. Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.

It is possible to recover data from the old profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

You can check for problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions and try this:

Hi, make sure you aren't in Full Screen Mode. Point to the top of the screen then right click > Exit Full Screen Mode.

Please see Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars and try clicking on Restore Defaults. Also, you may need to turn on the bookmarks bar as shown in the article.

You can also try this: Open bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Restore, and see if you have a backup there.

If not, please see -

These sounds like two different things:

  • Windows XP "System Restore" feature
  • Firefox's built-in "Refresh" feature

Firefox's feature moves your old settings to a folder on your desktop named Old Firefox Data. You can use the contents of that folder to recover missing settings, etc. But the Windows "System Restore" feature can destroy Firefox data without creating any backup. Personally, it never worked for me on XP.

Do you have an Old Firefox Data folder? If so, click inside and check for the latest modification dates to see whether anything here is recent. What do you find?

If Windows' "System Restore" erased all the automatic bookmark backups created after July 5th, then the only copies would be backups you made yourself or data stored by the "Sync" service, which is an optional feature you can use to share certain Firefox settings between different installations of Firefox.

To check what automatic bookmark backups are available in your current Firefox profile, you can check this article: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer. Please make a fresh backup before restoring anything.

Hi jscher 2000, Thanks for your help.

1) I was able to proceed as follows to retrieve my lost toolbars : Bookmark> Show all bookmarks>Import Backups>restore.... highlighting my history for month of July 2015. However my last restoration date under location column is for 7/20/2015....I require a restoration date prior to 7/20/2015( prefer... 7/5/2015 or close from my memory). Probably lost/or over written by myself in error 2) Could Mozilla have this info from prior to 7/20/2015 on their system to retrieve?....I just set up the new Sync function on my PC...also I only have one PC on hand. Please advise as time permits for you. Thanks

Mozilla offers the Sync service, but if you didn't have that set up before, then your bookmarks were completely private to your computer.

I don't have XP close at hand, but I think if you allow viewing of hidden files and folders, you can find the restore points in the system volume information folder which stores them. See: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/k.../309531. Now... I'm not sure you will be able to find a usable bookmarkbackups file by simply digging around in there because the file names may be modified. However, if you can find the bookmarkbackups folder, then you would have a good chance of finding one of them even if it needs to be renamed.

Firefox stores a maximum of 15 backups in the bookmarkbackups folder (pref: browser.bookmarks.max_backups = 15).

What is the current name of the Firefox profile folder?

When you reset Firefox then a new profile gets created with a time stamp appended.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Do you have an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop?

Thanks, Yes I did not have a Sync set up prior to this....however I will proceed with your inputs ...& actually my notebook PC system is Windows 7 & not XP, if this makes any difference

Windows 7 makes a huge difference. Your Firefox might be set to "Compatibility" mode because it reported to the forum that it runs on Windows XP.*

Do you want to try this utility to look for old bookmarkbackups folders: http://nicbedford.co.uk/software/systemrestoreexplorer/

* To check on the XP identification:

  • right-click your Firefox desktop icon > Properties > Compatibility tab. Deselect everything here so Firefox takes full advantage of Windows 7.

1) I have corrected the Windows 7 Firefox compatibility issue per your reply earlier. Also verified with 'Mozilla Firefox' >Troubleshoot compatibility....displays >Incompatible Application...which now reads 'fix application Firefox'....complete in troubleshoot report...in (view detailed description). 2) Will now work on the bookmark issue using link: http://nicbedford.co.uk/software/systemrestoreexplorer/

Thanks again
