How can I force my browser to download new content straight from the server? It used to be possible to do this by using the shift key and doing a page reload at the same time. I tried this and it didn't work. Am I doing something wrong??

Chosen solution

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

That should still work, Ctrl+Shift+r is another way.

Perhaps I should clarify that: Firefox will make a fresh network request, but there might be caches between Firefox and the website that will respond with cached data.

To confirm what Firefox is doing, press Ctrl+Shift+k to open the web console below the page in the lower part of the tab. Then click the Network tab along the top edge of the console. When you reload normally, you usually see many 304 status codes in the first column indicating the request was satisfied from the cache. However, when you use Ctrl+Shift+r, you should not see any of those.

Thanks guys, appreciate the help!! And didn't know there could be cache between me and the server.....that is nice to know about, for sure ;-)

I did find out though that using a picture, as I was having trouble with one and the reason I asked my question, was due to photobucket.com NOT deleting photos upon issuing the delete command to them. So if anyone is using them for web content, and you need many changes on your web site from day to day, photobucket is NOT the way to go. Find yourself a more responsive photo server, you'll be happy you did, well, that's MY opinion and I'm sticking to it, LOL!!!
