After installing Skype desktop on Windows 8.1, thunderbird stopped working. How do I fix this issue?

I installed skype desktop on my Windows 8.1 computer. . Then my thunderbird emails would not send. I got a message "failed to attach icon.skype.png" or something like that. Then I got other error messages, "could not save to sent folder", etc. My friend tried sending me an email and it failed, bouncing back to her. So SKYPE has definitely destroyed my thunderbird in one fell swoop. I tried restarting thunderbird in safe mode. same results. I tired upgrading it to version 38.0.1. Same results. Skype has it in a noose.
