A forwarded email was also sent to the original email authors - why???

I forwarded an email to an unrelated email address with a delivery receipt requested. Although the addressee on the forward has yet to send back the delivery receipt, the originators of the email that I forwarded have all sent back the delivery receipt - they were NOT on the forward addressing! Thank goodness nothing in my forwarded message was embarrassing as the originators have read everything even though I most certainly didn't want them to receive a copy!

To avoid potential embarrassing situations arising in the future, what do I need to do? To create my forward, I clicked the 'forward' button and pasted in the email address I wanted to forward to. The other addresses didn't show up in the addressing nor in the cc, etc. And I most certainly didn't bcc them! In fact, on my 'sent' copy, it appears as if the only recipient was the individual I addressed the forward to, no one else. This, however, is not the case given I've received delivery confirmation from the others....
