We recently went to wireless for my desktop computer; we bought a usb plug-in to convert the computer to wireless (it is older), got the speed upped, and it seemed that everything was a-okay. Speed good. Connection good. Yet i am off and on having problems with the wireless, both email and internet. It is driving me crazy because it will work great for a day or three, and then i will have a day where it will work, not work, work, not work... even though both the speed and signal are working. I checked my anti-virus/firewall and everything seems okay there.

Can this problem have something to do with settings in my email and internet software? I work on the computer and not knowing one day to the next whether the wireless will work is driving me crazy. I did go into e-care and noticed in one spot they had a "High Speed User ID". I don't know what this is or whether maybe i should be doing something with it???

Please if anybody has any ideas, let me know. This is crazy-making.

Thank you.

Any browser eg: Mozilla Firefox needs interent connectivity otherwise it will not work. Email clients like Thunderbird need to access the server via the internet, so if there is no internet connectivity then you will not be able to connect to server.

It is possible to go 'offline' with Thunderbird, but that just stops the email client using the internet, it does not have any effect on internet connectivity.

There are many reasons which can effect internet connectivity and more so if using wireless. This forum is for issues with Thunderbird email client only, so cannot go into depths about other issues.

However, here are a few hints and links which may help to point you in the right direction

Connectivity can depend upon wall contruction, placement of router/hub, other electrical cables nearby, etc.

You could test whether it is the actual router/hub by using ethernet cable instead of wireless for a week or two.

Try using a different channel.

Thank you very much for the response. I wasn't sure whether there was maybe an issue with the settings in Thunderbird and Firefox, but when i thought about it afterwards, i started to suspect more that the issue is my computer ... as we do not have the same problems with the other two devices on wireless. So i do realize my questions is outside the realm of this forum and thus greatly appreciate the suggestions and links. I have already followed some of the advice so we'll see how things go. I had no idea how many things could interfere, but at least now i have some ideas to go on - and information to refer to [to avoid further issues] when we eventually replace this computer. So this is a long winded way to say THANK YOU!

In my case it was the Microwave. Everything worked fine unless it was running.
