Thunderbird refuses to download emails

Since updating to Thunderbird 78 my emails refuse to download. If I uninstall and reinstall, after a restart, it works until I close Thunderbird, and then it refuses to work again. I have also had trouble sending messages. I'm using Norton antivirus software. Thunderbird used to be a great reliable product, but now it is totally unreliable.
