Last week or so, my spellchecker stopped responding, with a message that my free trial period had expired. I had no expectation of a trial period. how can I re-enable a UK style dictionary spellchecker please.

Can you share any screenshots? Is it an addon? We don't expire dictionaries, but some third-party addons can do it. You should switch to free alternative.

The inline spell checker in desktop Firefox does not have any form of trial period in using it. The only thing it needs is well a dictionary installed so it can spell words with. Most Firefox language locales come with a dictionary now days.

Dictionaries for Firefox are listed at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/language-tools/

Ignore the left list under language packs as that is not used with the spell checker in Firefox. Look at the right one under Dictionaries as there are three British dictionaries listed though one is incorrectly referred to as Spellchecker.
