"primary password" insistence from Thunderbird: WHAT the heck *IS* this about? Which password? Tried several related ones but they don't work.

The primary password is optional and never required. It allows a user to prevent others from accessing the account passwords, but it is not an account password itself. More info here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/protect-your-thunderbird-passwords-primary-password
