Can't send charter.net emails

This is an intermittent problem. Sometimes Thunderbird refuses to send charter.net email. I get this error msg:

Login to server smtp.charter.net with username xxx failed. (xxx is my email address)

Resetting the modem and rebooting the computer don't help. This happens on multiple computers. Changing my Spectrum password doesn't help either. Spectrum support said I need to switch to Gmail or Outlook, which would be a major nuisance.

In a day or two it probably will start working again. Also, it basically never works when I'm traveling. Sending email from the Spectrum website works fine, and I can send from my Android phone no problem. I have Gmail on my android tablet and it can't even search for emails so I have zero confidence in that, plus I have many folders of emails going back 10+ years on Thunderbird which I can't port over to another email program.

I saw the previous conversation blaming the problem on Thunderbird, which isn't helpful.

Actually I got it to work ... for some reason my user name was set to jmeisner1 instead of jmeisner1@charter.net. The truncated version used to work but entering the full email address got it working again.

Use mobile.charter.net on 587, SSL/TLS security, authentication = normal password, User Name = email address. Select SSL/TLS first, then type in 587 for the port. If that doesn't work, use STARTTLS, which is the normal security on 587.

Thanks very much for your response. These are the settings I use on my Android phone (using Samsung email) but they don't work on my desktop or laptop (using Thunderbird). I didn't think it would work but I tried anyway to no avail.

The SMTP (not mobile) outgoing server settings are smtp.charter.net, port 25, user name = full email address

mobile.charter.net is for the incoming IMAP server on port 993 and the outgoing on 587, and according to the link in my first reply, are for "mobile devices, including mobile phones and laptops", meaning desktops, too, with TB. If you choose to use non-secure port 25 (and 110 for incoming POP), you probably won't be able to send or receive unless connected to the Spectrum/Charter network.
