Issue with Firefox bookmark recovery
Dear Firefox Support,
I am writing to report an issue that I encountered while attempting to recover my bookmarks in Firefox. After reinstalling Windows, I installed Firefox on my new system and attempted to retrieve my saved pages. While browsing through the settings, I discovered a backup recovery button in the bookmarks section and assumed it would restore my previous session in Firefox. Unfortunately, this action deleted all my saved bookmarks and set them to the default settings.
I am extremely disappointed and upset about losing all of my bookmarks, and I am hoping that you can assist me in recovering them. Additionally, I have been unable to locate any method of restoring my saved pages, and I would appreciate your advice on this matter as well.
Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to retrieve my lost bookmarks and recover my saved pages. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Pavlo

Hi there!
I just wanted to say a big thank you for your help. Your suggestion actually gave me an idea to try and restore my bookmarks from my other device, and it turned out to be successful! I found that I had stored a lot more backups on that device, and I was able to restore my bookmarks from one of those backups.
I know it wasn't the exact solution you suggested, but it worked out great for me in the end. So, thank you and everyone else who tried to help me out. I'm thrilled that I finally managed to retrieve my bookmarks!

Hi
Thank you for your question about the Firefox Sync service.
It appears from your question, that you are using Firefox Sync as a back up service. This is not what Sync is designed to do. The Firefox Sync service takes a copy of the data you wish to include and transfers it to a second device (typically a mobile device such as a tablet or a telephone) running a copy of Firefox. The storage in between all attached devices is both temporary and fragile and is not stable enough to be (and is not designed as) a reliable backup service.
If you have a copy of your Firefox profile for desktop Firefox, you may be able to recover your bookmarks and other data. Please have a read of this article.
If you have a copy of your data on a mobile version of Firefox, please follow these instructions to connect it to Firefox Sync to copy your data.
Thank you for your response. It appears that I mistakenly attempted to restore bookmarks from a backup, which unfortunately resulted in the deletion of all of my actual bookmarks. Furthermore, I have noticed that my bookmarks have disappeared from my other devices as well. Despite reviewing all of the articles you suggested, I have been unable to resolve this issue.
I find it odd that I only have one bookmark backup available, which is the same one I attempted to restore from. It appears to be empty and was likely created when I reinstalled Firefox. Is it possible for me to restore my bookmarks from my browsing history, perhaps from yesterday?
If you restore a JSON backup then this replaces all the bookmarks with the bookmarks in the backup.
The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once. You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list. You can see if you have a backup with an item count that looks promising.
- bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.
You can look at this tool to inspect a compressed jsonlz4 bookmarks backup and possibly convert this file to HTML to be able to merge bookmarks.
