Hi, Guys

I just got an email from Mozilla telling me about their new upcoming service to remove personal information from the web. In that email there was a link to someone's "free personal data removal workbook and credit freeze guide". I clicked on that link, and Norton blocked it as being a "dangerous webpage".

Norton also says "You attempted to access: https://gate.sc/?url=https%3A%2F%2Finteltech..."

And that, "This is a known dangerous webpage. It is highly recommended that you do NOT visit this page."

So, what's going on here? Please let me know.

Hi JT, I don't know which page has those links.

Anyway, it's possible the gate.sc site isn't working correctly at the moment. You can find a clean link to the workbook on the podcaster's links page:

Hi John, what message were you reading?

When I search my relevant mail folder looking for any message referring to a credit freeze, I come up empty. However, I don't subscribe to everything.

Also, links in Mozilla newsletters generally run through a mozilla.org address, and not directly to third party sites, so if such a link appeared in the newsletter, that is suspicious.

I just remembered your subject line was Firefox Monitor. I got an alert about "LinkedIn Scraped Data" which only had links to Mozilla sites, no third party sites.

Do you read your mail in a tab in Firefox? If so, it is subject to being modified by add-ons. If we consider the possibility that an add-on is making a temporary change to the display the message, you could test this way:

Firefox's Safe/Troubleshoot Mode

In this mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is running:

You can restart Firefox in Safe/Troubleshoot Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

If Firefox is not running:

Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

Note: Don't use the Refresh without first reviewing this article to understand what will be deleted: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

I did what you suggested, and the result was interesting if also puzzling. After setting Firefox in Troubleshoot mode, I went to the original email from Firefox Monitor, clicked on the link in it and was taken to the page where they explained what the service would do once they have it up and running. On that page were two more links:

Again, I clicked on the second link, the one offering the free workbook. Doing that took me to a new, blank page at https://gate.sc/?url=https%3A%2F%2Finteltechniques.com%2Fdata%2Fworkbook.pdf&token=1d9eb5-1-1616783838447

Obviously, Norton didn't stop me this time. On the other hand, nothing appeared on the screen. So, I have no clue what's going on here.

Any ideas?

Thanks. I used the link you gave me, and it worked! I still don't know why the other one didn't, but I got the download. So, I'm happy. JT
