thunderbird 78 HANGING. safe mode works
since being automatically "upgraded" to 78, my thunderbird has become a nightmare. most extremely useful extensions were broken + thunderbird hangs more than it functions.
when i discovered i couldn't revert to 68 i disabled all add-ons, including 'provider for google calendar', + had to reload my calendars <6> as calDAV.
with all extensions disabled it hangs 90% of the time, allowing tiny windows of time when it is responsive.
i have used thunderbird since version 3 + never had issues like this
the error console consistently reports 6 errors; 5 regarding "L10nRegistry.jsm" <no idea what this is> 1 regarding "search-extensions/twitter/manifest.json"
safe mode works ok, normal mode with all extensions disabled doesn't
any advice would be very much appreciated thanks

thanks for your advice
i reset as many of the add-on preferences i could find + then restarted a number of times, but the hanging issue persisted
i bit the bullet + made a new profile, copied all POP mail folders + address books across, set up all the IMAP accounts, set up all the calendars, set up all the folder/column sorting + layout settings
we'll see how it goes...
in googling this problem i see that there are many angry + unhappy people who have been fucked over by the update to 78. let's hope this doesn't happen again.
and for the future i'm not allowing any automatic updates!
again, thanks for your help

If safe mode works OK, you either have incompatible add-ons, or a broken layout, or an incorrect hardware acceleration setting. There are other possibilities, but those are the most likely causes:
thanks,
i had already disabled hardware acceleration, which had been on without problems on 68 + before.
i have now deleted all add-ons + reset the toolbars + controls in the safe mode startup, but thunderbird is still hanging every few minutes <my mail accounts are set to fetch mail only manually>, so i don't believe it is related to the fetching mail process...
is there any way to purge the about:config settings of any settings left over by deleted add-ons? or are they automatically purged on deleting the add-on?
thanks
Some add-ons leave preferences in Config. editor when they are removed. If you see any prefs. beginning with extension, they can be reset from the right-click menu.
There is no 'correct' setting for hardware acceleration - some systems should have it enabled, others not. Try with it enabled in normal mode.
To start with a completely fresh set of preferences, create a new profile from Help/Troubleshooting, about:profiles, add an account, and see if the hanging persists. If it doesn't, mail, contacts etc. can be transferred from the old profile to the new one. TB can run in either profile from about:profiles.
