Hi I have thunderbird on 2 laptops for several email addresses hosted on hostgator servers. Hostgator allow the shared server to use 25 simultaneous processes, the problem I have is when the laptop is on and thunderbird is running I have 14 email processes always connected to the server, leaving only 11 processes available to other mail clients as well as website traffic. How can I stop thunderbird from constantly using so many resources? It literally never disconnects unless thunderbird or the laptops are shut down.

You can limit the number of connections to a server under Tools -> Account Settings -> <account> -> Server Settings -> Advanced -> Maximum number of server connections to cache.

If you currently have 14 connections, maybe you have more than one account configured?

Hi Thanks Onno, I think you may have pointed me in the right direction. I noticed that most of the connections were saying IDLE and the settings page you mentioned had an option for "use IDLE command if the server supports it". I believe this could be what is holding the connections open, I'll get my colleague to check his settings and mark as resolved if this cures it.
