Firefox is my default browser, but suddenly it doesn't respond anymore to clicks on links for other programs such as Thunderbird. it happens for every link I try in any other program I tried.

Try to undo and redo Firefox as the default browser.

Make another browser like IE the default browser and then let Firefox do it again.

That made it worse. Now I can't even click on html files anymore. If I do, I get the error "There was a problem sending the command to the program." (Although I am not certain I tried that before, so maybe it didn't work before I changed IE to the default browser.)

I restarted firefox after this and now it works. Very odd. Restarting didn't help before. Thanks for your help.

This started happening as soon as I updated from Firefox 5 to Firefox 6. I tried setting another browser as my default, and links worked there, but when I set Firefox back as my default, links from other programs still don't work.
