I deleted the app and re-installed it. Now 8.0.1 works, but all my personal data is lost. I would have fancied a much better service from Mozilla. No wonder that people turn to Google Chrome.

I'm very sorry this happened. I've reported your bug to the Firefox iOS developer team. A bug like that is very extreme & I would hope rare. How is Firefox iOS holding up for you now since the the reinstall?

One theory I have is this may be related to syncing data in Firefox iOS. Do you use this feature at all?

No, I do not use the sync function. Can the user settings not be stored separately as with the pc version?

They are stored separately on the phone itself. The Sync feature just helps share those settings, bookmarks, tabs and history with your other devices.

When I reported your issue, I was told the crashes were fixed in 8.1 [which is different from 8.0.1]. I will see if there's a way to backup your settings using another tool so you may have an alternative to restore from. But since Apple is strict about the types of apps they approve for their app store, there might not be one. :/

Hi Noah_SUMO, thanks for your reply. I have the same problem again! FF 8.1.1 was working fine until it suddenly crashed. Now it shows the same symtoms as described above: it crashes instantly when opened. I have no clue at all how this happened.

You say the personal settings are stored separately on the phone. But why are they gone when re-installing FF?

Updated to FF 8.2 - still the same problem! FF chrashes instantly. when checking open apps it seems to be open and shows the last website it visited before it crashed, at that time running 8.1.1. It seems I have to uninstall it again which means I will loose my settings again. Very annoying!

No response. OK, good bye Firefox, hello Safari :(

D'oh! I wrote a reply here 4 days ago & it doesn't look like it posted. :(

I originally wrote that I was asking about any more known crashing issues and had an idea for you to try if you'd be willing to find your crash reports that are hidden on your iPhone. They could give the developers the clues they need to see what is causing this crash.

To retrieve the crash reports generated on your iPhone:

  • Start by opening up the Settings app.
  • Navigate to General -> Privacy -> Analytics -> Analytics Data
  • Select a Firefox crash from the list. This will start with "Firefox" and contain the timestamp of the crash.
  • Tap on the crash and you will see a text field with a crash log. Long press to Select All and then Copy the crash text.
  • Paste it in this thread. If it's too long, try using Pastebin then copy the url you get for the Pastebin you saved & share it here.

Thanks! I'll pass this on to the devs. Sorry for the frustrating experience and for the late reply.

If you want to see if the beta version of Firefox iOS has this problem solved, you can grab it from here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ios/testflight

There's another release planned for mid-September around the same time the next version of iOS is dropping. With any luck this problem is permanently resolved for you with that version.
