How can I set preference so that, when I download, I am given the option of replacing a file with the same name rather than having a numbered copy of the file?

I reinstalled Firefox, and it now does not give me the option of replacing a file with the same name when I download. Instead, it automatically creates a numbered copy of the file (e.g., file(1).doc).

  How can I remedy this?
  Thank you.

Could you try setting Firefox to ask you where you want to save downloads? That should allow you to have more control over file naming. It's set on the Preferences page. See: Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings.

Does that work?

'Got the same problem (very annoying);   setting Firefox to ask me where I want to save downloads didn't work.
'Thought it was supposed to be this way,  cause quite frankly:   (annoying as it may be)   it does make sense ......

I just realized:   I   did  ask Firefox to save them:
in the same folder   !
And   that   was my mistake,   wasn't it   ?
