When I open the menu and click on options a blank page opens saying "about preferences". When I try to close the blank page the browser freezes up saying system not responding. All the other menu items work. I have uninstalled, reinstalled same thing keeps happening.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

The System Detail list next to the question shows that you run an older Firefox 43 version that is no longer supported with security updates. Always update Firefox and Add-ons to the latest versions to get all security fixes.

Please update to the current Firefox 46.0 release.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
