i just downloaded the latest firefox version but i can t open it. 

is there a way of still updating my version so i can use it safely?

Unfortunately, PowerPC macs are no longer supported by Firefox. Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.4 or PowerPC processors. The article I referenced above does provide a community powered version of Firefox that will run on PPC macs.
