Well if that is so, how do I download the tar.gz version and install it?

You can find the latest Firefox release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

See also:

You can also check the software repositories of your Linux distribution to see if it offers a Firefox package.
Note that such versions may have been modified with possibly unwanted features and take longer to get (security) updates as you have to wait until they have added the new version to the repositories.

I also forgot to mention how do you disable firefox from being the default browser, as I use to have it that way?

Firefox will ask to be the default browser on a first start with a new profile.

You can check the default browser setting here:

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General : System Defaults: "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup"

If Firefox is already the default browser then you need to make another browser the default browser.

cor-el,

I know how to check if it is the default browser, but I want it to be not the default browser , as you said previously ""You need to check the preferred applications (e.g. gnome-default-applications-properties) in Kubuntu and set another browser as the default browser if you do not want Firefox to be that." of which how do I do it?

cor-el,

Can I adjust the parameters in Firefox thru about:config in address bar, so as to force Firefox to show the window asking to set as default browser Y/N?

ray

That is controlled via the browser.shell.checkDefaultBrowser pref.

cor-el,

still haven't answered my query on "Can I adjust the parameters in Firefox thru about:config in address bar, so as to force Firefox , or any other means to force showing the window asking to set as default browser Y/N? ",also what should those parameters read in the about:confog? and how can I resolve my problem

If the above mentioned browser.shell.checkDefaultBrowser has the default true value then Firefox will check the default browser setting on the next start.

You can verify that here:

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General : System Defaults
[X] "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup"

You will only get an alert if Firefox currently isn't the default browser, so if you didn't see the message in your case then Firefox is already the default browser.

cor-el,

But firefox is already set as the default browser, so want to change it not to be and for it to ask?

cor-el,

There is no options tab within the tools tab, but I found it thru the edit/preferences/ advanced/general/system defaults- but it is already ticked?

Sorry I didn't noticed that you are on Linux

Instead of Tools > Options use:

  • Linux: Edit > Preferences
  • Mac: Firefox > Preferences
  • Windows: Firefox > Options

Press F10 if the menu bar is hidden on Linux or use "Firefox > Preferences"

cor-el,

there is no options button in the tools tab, only what I said before

and how do I use firefox preferences?

ray

more options

"Edit > Preferences" is the Linux equivalent of the Windows "Firefox/Tools > Options" path to the preferences.

See https://support.mozilla.org/kb/firefox-options-preferences-and-settings

cor-el,

see attached, as my edit-preferences-advanced- already have checked thru system defaults to always check to see as default browwser, but does not come up with the window asking if I want it to be the default y/n as I want to be able to say no ? tried to download the image but says "Invalid or no image received."

the link is thru my /home/letters/firefox preferences-advanced tabs 16-6-12

If Firefox doesn't ask that it wants to become the default browser then Firefox is already set as the default browser and thus there is no need to ask that.

dor-el,

you don't understand I dont want firefox to be my default browser, and I can't get it to ask me if I want Y/N, so what way that I want to revert it from being the default to asking to be the default? of which I want to choose, but it auto defaults. so there must be a way ?

ray

From what I can see now then Firefox seems to be the default browser.

You will have to remove the check-mark in the Firefox preferences to prevent Firefox from trying to get the default browser.

  • Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General : System Defaults: "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup"

Then you need to set another browser the default browser.

cor-el,

I have removed the marker for "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup" , and google chrome is set as default, so started FF up again, but still doing the same n0 prompt to load as default y/n, still FF defaly browser, is there any other way?
