Very slow while deleting message after upgrade to 38.2.0
The performance of Thunderbird is remarkably slower since the last release. I delete one to two hundred messages at the same time in the same folder. While completing the delete, Thunderbird "counts" through them much slower (low left status). Clicking on anything (read message in another folder) makes it "hang" momentarily. It may be several seconds before opening the message while waiting for the delete to complete :/
[u] What I have done: /u Manually compacted the folders Defragmented the computer Deep Optimize and Defraged the %AppData% folders (subfolders) Backed up the data (MozBackup) deleted the accounts and restored them Defragmented again
All of this is to no avail.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on Intel Pentium CPU G2130 @ 3.20GHz (2 CPUs) with 16Gb Ram. Sata6 on 2 each 1Tb hard disk with 70% free on the boot drive and 35% free on the second drive. Ideas on boosting the performance?
Chosen solution
Please start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7
Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode

This is a very good idea, thanks, Wayne!
I now have more ideas to test other things due to the results.
The performance is much better in safe mode w/ networking. I deleted 185 messages as described above. The performance is more "regular" and closer to what was prior of the last update.
It will take about 24 hours to accumulate more messages to delete but I think tomorrow, I will try disabling the AVG Pro Antivirus during the delete. Click around on other messages to read/view, etc. checking the program response.
More given information. I take MS Updates selectively and have not in the past 40 days or so. I also take hardware driver updates in the same manner. I have not added or changed (or updated) any background programs (minimal & basic) None of these have changed since the issue came about.
The AVG 'did' make a program version change in the past 10 days so I suspect this may have influence but don't understand why it would scan messages while deletion.
Any other ideas on thing to test or check?
I will post back after the AVG disable testing.
Modified
Okay, This morning, I have disabled the AVG, Auto-Defrag, Nvidia, CCleaner Monitoring and HP Printer after a clean boot. Basically startup items are disabled. Deleting 225 items in one folder and clicking to view email is still slow to react. I finally clicked Write a message and it would not come up until the delete process finished.
I guess my work around is to delete smaller "chunks" (40 to 50) of email at a time.
In case anyone is wondering why the email. I have products that sell over night and I keep track of the total number and not the content of the items that have sold. Content is handled elsewhere.
Any other ideas or information needed, please let me know.

Given this, and your last prior comment I would say there is still something affecting you that is initialized during Windows startup. In all likelihood it is antivirus related - even though you say it is disabled.
Also, make sure your trash folder is empty
