Disappearing inbox messages

I use Thunderbird for three e-mail accounts. I have had the same problem with TWO of them: on occasion, ALL messages in the INBOX disappear.

Today they disappeared from one account's inbox. They are not in the trash box either. I have not noticed any pattern to this at all.

I am using T-bird Version 31.5, Windows Vista Home Premium. Cause and solution, anyone?
