Thunderbird 147.0.1 (aarch64, macos, m2)
Team, After spending many many hours creating 14 search-folders that can find all of the right emails in approx. 20 "real" (local) folders.
Then I renamed 10 local folders and noticed my searchfolders disappearing!?
Big panic. Now, only the last 2 created searchfolders where there. The rest was gone. Realizing that the searchfolder config is in a file called "VirtualFolders.dat" I instantly took a copy. Restart Thunderbird: Now only 1 searchfolder was left. The copied virtualfolders.dat file still had 2 searchfolders in it but the rest is gone. There is no other copy/backup of this file.
These search folders are the only thing that generated some sense in gigantic piles of email.
Does renaming local folders KILL Virtual/Search folders?

Greetings.
For many years I have used Thunderbird to send and receive mail through my Outlook account (while happily donating to Mozilla).
A few months ago, every initial attempt to send a message abruptly started to fail, generating the dreaded notice that “the message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp-mail.outlook.com timed out.”
What is odd is that if I keep trying to send, the message always goes out eventually -- sometimes after only two tries, sometimes after ten tries.
Thus, my Outlook account works, my Thunderbird settings work, the SMTP server works -- but only at random intervals.
The problem has continued through several Thunderbird updates, including the current one (147.0.1). I tried changing the server to smtp.office365.com and got the same performance.
I am on MacOS 15.4 and am not running any third-party antivirus or firewall product.
My thanks to anyone who has insight into this problem.

I have Thunderbird 142-esr on a Windows 11 computer with two users in separate Windows users account. The second user (my wife) suddenly had her gmail login stop working on TB, even though it continued working on all other devices. The symptom was that the inbox would hang trying to log on to gmail, although no error messages appeared.
My account worked normally throughout this time.
After trying less destructive fixes such as closing the application, logging off, and restarting Windows, I guessed there was an issue with her account, possibly a corrupted file. So I deleted her gmail account. When I tried to create a new account, TB accepted her credentials and the Google login came up. I successfully authenticated to Google, but installation failed when I returned to the TB new account screen. After a long wait, TB issued an error message saying the password or user name was bad.
I did two tests to isolate the problem. First, I attempted to install my wife's gmail account in my Windows TB instance. That failed in the same way. Second, I attempted to install my gmail account on her Windows instance. That worked. I concluded there was nothing wrong with her instance of TB. I thought it might be an issue with her password, although Google has never asked her to change it, and there haven't been issues logging on outside of TB. Her password did not meet Google's current requirements, so I changed it to 12 characters, mixture of upper/lower case, numerals, and special characters. That worked.
Unfortunately, during the process, I lost her settings, and it took a while to recover them from backup media.
I'm posting this more to ask if others have experienced such a problem than as a request for help, as I think the underlying issue is now resolved. Because it may be some kind of malignant interaction between TB and gmail, I thought it might be worth reporting as well.

I am working on an article explaining aspects of message verification such as SPF, DKIM, DMARC and ARC. I have been studying how messages are marked as spam. I have observed that some messages that would be purely legit (like from my bank) are occasionally marked spam. Others show inconsistency -- such as my articles from Substack being marked as spam for some addresses I own, while others are not.
I am particularly interested in how Thunderbird is interpreting the header in regards to source verification. In most of my articles I have advocated for a scoring system that would better inform the recipient of the trustworthiness of the message. I noticed there is an X-spam tag on some messages that is based on a scoring algorithm.
Appreciate your assistance.

Neither plain-text nor HTML-signatures are being removed in replies, even though they are at the bottom of the email i'm replying to, prepended by the default -- tag on a dedicated line, as is the standard. I double checked that mail.strip_sig_on_reply is set to true. This happens on two separate accounts configured on my client. Thunderbird Version 140.6.0esr on Tuxedo OS (equivalent to Ubuntu 24.04)

Hello,
I love Thunderbird, but I have recently moved to use a Android device for most of my work, and despite that there is now Thunderbird for Android, I found that there is a feature I really need but it is not working there: moving mails across different accounts. I work daily with four different accounts and sometimes I need to move some threads from to another. I had to move to a different email reader because of that, but I would really love to come back to Thunderbird.
Best regards, Patricia.

When I receive an event invite and I accept it Thunderbird only gives me the option to save the event to a local calendar and not to any shared calendars located remotely on a NAS. Is there a way to have Thunderbird also display the remote calendars? And after I accept an event is there a way to move the accepted event to a different calendar? Thank you for your inputs in advance!

My mom has been using thunderbird since 2015 like me on a debian based linux distro. I upgraded her PC lately. I double backed her .thunderbird account by copying her .thunderbird folder and using export to an external drive. It took an unusually long time to do this. Her email account is setup to use smtp but she has >1GByte size mapi folder. After getting the new PC up and running, only the smtp email is showing up. How can I access the email in her mapi folder?

Hello, I am trying to send and email with script and 2 photos but every time I try to send it I get a very quick flash of a small box with writing in it but it disappears right away, and my email is not sent. Why is this happening and how can I correct it so my email will actually be sent?
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Can anyone please explain why, when I type an email and use Bold, Underline, paragraphs etc the program actually changes some text to symbols like asterisks & underscore symbol instead of underline etc that I did not enter and in general makes the body of the email look terrible when it is sent and printed out. I have tried typing the message in Word first and then copying to the email but it still seems to change it when the email is sent. Does anyone know why and can this be fixed? The last couple of emails I have had to prepare in Word, save as pdf documents and then send as attachments and this is a long and tedious process just to send an email message even if it is a long message. Thank you.

I’m running Thunderbird 147.0.1 (64-bit) on both my desktop and laptop, both using Windows 11 Version 25H2 (Build 26200.7705). I’m trying to highlight sent (outgoing) messages where the correspondent and recipient are different (i.e., not sending to myself). When this condition is met, I want the subject line to appear green. My logic is: • Match outgoing mail where the correspondent column contains one of my addresses • Exclude rows where the recipient column also contains one of my addresses • Apply formatting only to the subject column tr:has(
td.correspondentcol-column[title*="@pm.me"], td.correspondentcol-column[title*="@protonmail.com"], td.correspondentcol-column[title*="@passinbox.com"]
):not(
:has(td.recipientcol-column[title*="@pm.me"]), :has(td.recipientcol-column[title*="@protonmail.com"]), :has(td.recipientcol-column[title*="@passinbox.com"])
) td.subjectcol-column {
color: var(--tb-green) !important; font-weight: 600 !important; background-color: #e8f5e9 !important;
} Same Thunderbird version, same Windows build, same CSS file, same mail account structure. Is there something on the desktop system that could prevent this from working? For example: • about:config setting related to CSS • Layout or column differences affecting selectors • Rendering engine differences between installations • UI density / table layout mode differences My expectation is that this logic should behave identically on both systems, so I suspect a configuration or UI state difference. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thunderbird is not opening. It has all of my business email and communication records. I don't know what to do.
