Is a screen prompt legitimate and should I act on it? I cannot insert a screen print of the prompt here. Its headings and text are: Software Update Update Available A security and stability update for Firefox is available Firefox 5.0 It is strongly recommended that you apply this update for Firefox as soon as possible.

Cheers Max

Yes.
You can update via Help > About Firefox or download the full version and install that.
