Firefox and snap

erwin.espitia.torres

Hi everyone, I really like Firefox—it’s been my favorite browser for 20 years, both on Windows and GNU/Linux (ever since Windows XP)—but I’ve decided to switch to LibreWolf because I can no longer stand Snap hijacking the Firefox installation I set up via the .deb package. If anyone can help me stop Snap from interfering, I’d appreciate it.

As far as I know, you can install Firefox directly from Debian GNU/Linux repository. If you use GNOME, Firefox is installed by default. Why do you need snap?

I suggest that you just disable snap from your system.

Hello, thank you very much for your help. I have tried disabling Snap for Firefox and keeping only the .deb version, but Snap keeps removing the .deb version and replacing it with the Snap version. I tried using this command, but it doesn't seem to have any effect:

echo -e "Package: firefox\nPin: release o=canonical*\nPin-Priority: -1" | sudo tee /etc/apt/preferences.d/firefox-no-snap

Could you please help me with this?

Which system are you in? Debian or others?

I am on Kubuntu 26.04.

Ubuntu is known to re-install snap release each upgrade. You may try this after that each time:

1. Block Firefox package from Ubuntu's own repositories ``` tee /etc/apt/preferences.d/firefox-no-snap > /dev/null <<'EOF' Package: firefox* Pin: release o=Ubuntu* Pin-Priority: -1 EOF ``` 2. add .deb source ``` add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/ppa apt update ``` 3. add priority ``` tee /etc/apt/preferences.d/mozilla-firefox > /dev/null <<'EOF' Package: firefox* Pin: release o=LP-PPA-mozillateam Pin-Priority: 1001 EOF ```

4. install ``` snap remove firefox apt install firefox-esr ```

I only use the tarball archives from Mozilla and not any so called package builds of Firefox which can have its own issues on top of what official tarball builds can have. Also this way you still get updates even when your version of Linux distro is EOL in software packages support.

There's a few bugs open about the priority, most recent being bugzilla.mozilla.org/2083380 that might be close to your system that has some recommendations to use.
