OLDER BROWSERS, OLDER MACHINES

OK, for me, this has always been the 'go to' browser of choice.... until recently...!! I've tried a whole heap of browsers, some open-source derivatives, some based on gecko, you name it, I've tried it.... for Mac and for Windows, although I won't put some of those tripe PC ones on my beloved Mac, and there in lies the problem...!! My Mac Pro is a 17yr old quad which is still quick by today's standard and I run El Capitan as it won't upgrade anymore, running Firefox v78... I don't it to be running the most up to date b'cos I'm not doing anything special to warrant getting t'morrow's browser today.... my problem is.... some of the extension which made this browser run faster have been stopped due to verification issues...!! How did these extensions make to the Add-ons if they were never verified in the first place as they were in use for a while before use was halted...!! Now, I get stupid pop-ups randomly, along with salacious material asking my to join suggestive websites and worse, some of which bounce to 'other' websites when you try to delete them...!! Do you not have ways of verifying these extension before they hit the Add-ons page...?

Hello,

Could you please list the extensions you are referring to? And what kind of error do you get with those extensions? A quote or a screenshot would be appreciated.

These are just a few which have the following statement underneath them " *** could not be verified for use in Firefox and has been disabled."

      • = the title of add-on

As you may know, Firefox verifies the digital signature on each extension before enabling it. Recently, the certificate Firefox used for this signature check expired. For old versions of Firefox, there's no retroactive update to install the new certificate. More information on this situation: Update Firefox to prevent add-ons issues from root certificate expiration.

Assuming your Firefox is an "ESR" (Extended Support Release) version, you have the option of turning off verification. This isn't ideal, because there is a risk that a malicious unsigned extension could sneak in, but I think it's the only workaround I have to offer you at the moment. For more information, check toward the end of the following article: Add-on signing in Firefox.
