transfer Thunderbird from Windows Home laptop to Windows Pro laptop

I have a new laptop and did a backup of my files on the older laptop (Windows Home) and restored them to the new laptop (Windows Pro). Then I installed Thunderbird on the new laptop and I already had e-mails on it. But there are thousands of e-mails in the wrong folders.

The Windows Home has Thunderbird 128.10.oesr (32 bit) and the Windows Pro laptop has Thunderbird 128.9.2esr (64 bit). What should I do? Should I uninstall Thunderbird on the new laptop? Then what?

I need to do something with a profile folder, right? But what?

Please help.

It's a mess right now.

Hi David,

I turned my new laptop off and was waiting for a response from you or Toad-Hall.

I just now saw your e-mail on my phone (as Thunderbird was not working at all, just giving me that error I sent).

So, I turned on my new computer and lo and behold, when I clicked on the Thunderbird icon, it opened right up.

It looks like all my address books are there.

And my folders look like they are there. I looked in a couple of folders.

Why did this all of a sudden work?

I think the problem is solved.

Thank you and Toad-Hall so much.

So, you're only 6 hours difference to me in Belgium. I'm from Central California about an hour and a half east of Silicon Valley.

Hi David, There is no Thunderbird icon on the Desktop, but there is one in the Taskbar.

Yes, I downloaded it from the Microsoft Store.

You need to have the same version on both computers OR a newer one on the newer computer. So you need to download the current 'Thunderbird Extended Support Release' channel which is version 128.10.1

Where did you get the download installation for the new computer? If you used the Windows App Store then it does not use the same default location for profiles. Uninstall Thunderbird from new computer.

Get a download for 128.10.1 from the official webpage at this link: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

Make sure to select preferred language and the Channel = Thunderbird Extended Support Release and OS = Windows.

This will then look in the correct location for profile. Please report back on what you now see.

Hi Toad-Hall, I've been working back and forth with David.

Is he aware of what you are telling me to do? Do I follow your instructions or wait for David's?

Toad-Hall's response is where I was also going. Getting you to an official release from thunderbird.net is your first step and his post explains it.

I just did what Toad-Hall suggested.

When installing Thunderbird from the link he suggested, I got the error message attached.

I uninstalled thunderbird again. And clicked the link you sent me and this time I chose "Thunderbird Extended Support...".

I clicked on the icon on the Desktop and Properties is shown in the attachment.

When I click on the Desktop icon, I receive the attached message.

I have done nothing with that message.

I'm not sure what to do.

Do I create a new profile or what?

Good that means you have the correct version.

You get that redo profile error message because it sounds like you previously downloaded the 'Release' version which is a 138*

Do this:

Exit Thunderbird now this is important.

  • In windows search type: %Appdata%
  • Select the %Appdata% file folder option
  • Select 'Roaming' folder
  • Select 'Thunderbird' folder
  • Select 'Profiles' folder
  • Select the profile name folder which I think is 'ix708c3d.default' based on an earlier image you provided
  • Look for this file 'compatibility.ini' and delete it.

Then start up Thunderbird and report on results.

Click on 'Exit'

Follow the other instructions I gave to remove the 'compatibility.ini' file.

I wasn't receiving your updated comments here and I wasn't receiving e-mails in Thunderbird on the new computer.

I just saw your messages on my phone.

I did what you said and deleted the compatibility.ini file.

When I started Thunderbird, I received the message as attached. It's the same as before.

Hello, do you have further instructions?

David or Toad-Hall, are you working tomorrow?

It looks like you're in California, so you still have half a day to go.

I'm willing to work on this more this evening my time if you are.

Will anyone help me with this issue tomorrow?

Hi, Carol, I'll be here, although I lack the Toad-Hall's expertise and am hesitant to use another approach. Not having his knowledge of the internals, my approach at this point would be to - close thunderbird on new pc - since both computers are now at the same level, I would copy/paste the appdata\roaming\thunderbird folder (which I think you still have on external media) and overwrite the appdata\roaming\thunderbird folder on new pc - and then restart thunderbird

My inference is that he was wanting to relieve you from copying that again. Do post back so one of us can assist.

For what it's worth, I'm in New York. :)

I'm glad all is now well. Once done, I encourage doing a backup now that all works. here is a repeat of the steps, just in case the computer crashes or is otherwise corrupted at a future date:

BACKUP

  1. ensure thunderbird is not running
  2. enter %appdata% in search window on task bar and press Enter key
  3. this should open windows file explorer in Appdata\roaming folder
  4. highlight the Thunderbird folder and copy to external media

RESTORE

  1. ensure thunderbird is installed and NOT running
  2. enter %appdata% in search window on task bar and press Enter key
  3. you should be in Appdata\roaming folder , copy&paste the exported Thunderbird folder there. This may prompt to overwrite an existing folder of same name. allow it
  4. start thunderbird and all should be there

Thank you, David.

I've copied these instructions and will back it up tomorrow.

Have a great weekend!
