How to stop a pop-up every time I open Thunderbird?

Every time I open Thunderbird I get this: Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system.

Same thing happens with Firefox.

Running Ubuntu 14.04
