I get the message:

An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Authentication Required (VM401). Please verify that your email address is correct in your account settings and try again.

But I can't see how to verify the email address!

Chosen solution

When an ISP has grown by acquisition of smaller ISPs, it's commonplace for the full email address to be used, including the domain so they can resolve identical local parts in different email addresses. The only way to tell joe@freeserve.net from joe@orange.com is by using the full address.

Talktalk is similar in having bought up tiscali and with it, legacy lineone.net email accounts, amongst others.

Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select: 'Settings' click on 'Server Settings' for the mail account User Name = full email address

Post this info: In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information click on 'Copy text to clipboard' button

In this question forum right click in a 'Post a Reply' text box and select 'Paste' Edit/remove all info on fonts and printers, but nothing else.

I needed to find the Orange SMTP server and add it to the list and set it as default in order to get a result.

The entry of full email address to User Name was a counterintuitive step I hadn't found out however, so that was useful.
