How do I set the new tab page to my homepage?
When I open a new tab, I want it to show my homepage so I can search google straight away. I cannot find a way to set this up. The only option Firefox gives me is to use a blank page or a page showing pages I've already visited.
Why is it so difficult to do something this common and reasonable?
I know there is an extension to use, but I don't like to use extensions because I have no way to verify that they are safe and only do what they are meant to do.
The information I found by searching was out of date.

Open a new tab, click the cogwheel icon in the top right and select Learn about New Tab - you should land on this page. Then click the link mentioned for changing the New Tab settings (here), which will indicate that (and why) you need to install the New Tab Override add-on. I agree on the fact this info is a bit hard to find, so we may need to make some changes to one or more support articles.
Perhaps you already found this add-on, but please understand that some previous preference was removed due to abuse, as mentioned on the add-on’s page. As for the add-on itself, you can be pretty sure it is safe to use since it was based on the original code and the developer knows what he’s doing.
