I want to be able to open a new tab in a tab group directly from the tag group view. There used to be a button for this in the tag group view window. A couple version ago it disappeared. Is there a shortcut key for this now? I can't find any information on how to do this.

You can do this with the Ctrl + T keyboard shortcut. A new tab will be created and you will exit the tab group view with the new, blank tab selected.
