Unable to close the first tab in my browser. I close other tabs, but the only way to close the first is to close the entire browser.

I'm slightly unsure what your problem is, but I think I can help.

In Firefox 3.6, the first tab in the browser always shows. In Firefox 3.5 and earlier, this didn't happen. (If I got the version numbers wrong feel free to correct me.) This could be one interpretation of your problem. If this is the case, you can open Tools > Options and uncheck 'Always show the tab bar' in the Tabs section.

If that is not what you meant, here is my second interpretation. I think you may also mean that you cannot close all the tabs in the browser. Firefox must keep one tab open at all times - a browser has nothing to show with no tabs open and would close. This is a design feature of most tabbed browsers - all that I have seen.

If I have not answered your question, feel free to reply.

Hope I helped, ~Chris

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

bingo324 - close but not quite.

Here's an example: I have 3 tabs open in my firefox browser (1st tab: google.com, 2nd tab: microsoft.com, and 3rd tab: facebook.com). If I click on the "X" in the right side of the google.com tab to close that tab, nothing happens. I can continue to browse in that tab as much as I want - as if I hadn't tried to close it. On my other computer, which has mozilla version 3.6.12, that tab will close if I do the same thing.

Some more info: If I have only two tabs open, and click the "X" on the first tab, nothing will happen. I can continue to browse in that tab as much as I want - as if I hadn't tried to close it. If I now click the "X" on the 2nd tab, the browser will close - as if I only had one tab open.
