My bookmarks & browsing history has disappeared. Backward & forward arrows not working. How can I get this back working?

Message I'm receiving from Firefox is "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because on of Firefox's files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem." I have not made any changes on my computer. I did uninstall and reinstall Firefox but bookmarks and history system still not working. I am using the latest version of Firefox on Windows Vista.

This indicates that there is a problem with the file that stores the bookmarks and history. Re-installing Firefox does not by default remove the profile folder where that file is stored. See Locked or damaged places.sqlite - MozillaZine Knowledge Base
