AOL mail
Hi!
I know this might not be directly related to Thunderbird, but all afternoon AOL won’t allow me to connect with an$ get my e-mails. Has AOL made any kind of change to their systems that anyone is aware of, but maybe AOL has neglected to inform the users. I’m running TB 47 on a Mac laptop and TB 78.8.1 on my Mac Pro and I cannot connect to AOL on either machine.

What are your settings? If the authentication method is 'normal password' instead of OAuth2, you are probably going to be blocked. OAuth2 isn't supported in TB versions before 68, but if you must use 47, you will probably have to use an app password in place of the account password.

Okay ... that was weird. It seems to have solved the problem. However, I'm not sure what you mean by an "app password" If I downloaded and used the AOL app. or a mail app in my iPad, I'd still just use my account password.
Additionally, why did this just start this afternoon? I've been using 47 for years and 78 for at least a month.
An app password is a strong password that some providers demand for desktop apps like TB, but they might not require it for mobile mail apps or their own mail app. It's also used for desktop apps that don't support OAuth2 authentication. OAuth2 has been available for AOL for a few months, but today they may have made it a strict requirement.
Okay ... checking TB 47, it does allow for OAuth2, bit when I try to get my mail, TB says that the server doesn’t support this. No problems with 78.
OAuth2 might appear in the menu for 47, but it doesn't have the necessary hardcoded bits to make it work with AOL or any other server (only gmail, AOL, Yahoo and a few others are supported, and only in TB 68+).
