Firefox Browser Update -- lost all passwords

I got a notice to update my browser and I was informed that I would lose my bookmarks and history. Okay, I can live with that. However, I also lost all my user names and passwords. What went wrong, and why must I lose that info when I execute and update -- seems like a real dis-incentive to update my browser.

Can you backup the data? The data on my system is unaffected by updates.
