Ever since I updated to Firefox 29, multiple crashes have happened. It doesn't matter what page I'm on or what I'm doing, it happens over 10 times in 5 minutes. The number of crashes is insane. http://i.imgur.com/RQVjZ0m.png

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling fresh. I have tried disabling all addons and extentions. I have updated my drivers on my computer, and all extentions for firefox. I have updated all my anti-virus and anti-malware programs. I have tried creating a new profile for firefox. I have turned off hardware acceleration. Nothing works.

Firefox even crashes in safe mode! I am at a loss right now, and I have been trying to figure out how to fix this for days.

Viewing my crash reports, I have found that the same file, "mswsock.dll" is in every one. http://i.imgur.com/BdAwU1r.png

I have tried scanning that file with all anti-virus software, and nothing flags it. A quick google search showed that this file is causing multiple people to have the same crash I am having.

I have referred to https://community.mcafee.com/thread/36486 and this does not help me.

I am so fed up, please someone help me.

guigs2/dribblet,

So I might have figured out what's going on. On the bug report, it states that disabling media.windows-media-foundation.enabled would relieve this crash report. Curious about this, I checked to see if a pref existed. It did not. Of course, I was running nothing but pre-release versions of Firefox (Nightly, Aurora) and I couldn't find the damn pref.
Guess what? 29.0.1 has it.

Disable media.windows-media-foundation.enabled from the site about:config

Hi,

Your crash reports are consistent on the same signature

  • @ EnumSoftwareMFTs(_GUID const&, unsigned int, __MIDL___MIDL_itf_mfobjects_0000_0006_0003 const*, __MIDL___MIDL_itf_mfobjects_0000_0006_0003 const*, IMFActivate***, unsigned int*

Thinking aloud
Right now I'm lookin' through your reports and I don't see anything out of the ordinary but it seems like mfplat.dll is the reason why Firefox crashed. mfplat.dll is a Windows Media Foundation Platform file. Previously when this bug was reported, it was back in Firefox 20 or 21. Disabling the media.windows-media-foundation.enable pref in about:config was the solution however, Firefox 29 has since removed that preference. So that solution isn't available anymore. EDIT: I was using Aurora and Nightly to test. AFAIK 29.0.1 HAS this pref in true default.

Is your computer up-to-date with Windows Update? Please be sure to download all updates from Windows Update to see if that fixes this.

There is a plug in that is being failed to be disabled. Check in about:config and look for plugin. It may be the one Moses is talking about above, but the bug associated with the last crash is old. And run a virus scan just in case. Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of. Better yet, if you can't open it try a clean reinstall and clear some of those malware related plugins.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Try to set these two prefs to false on the about:config page to disable the HTML5 media player:

  • media.windows-media-foundation.enabled
  • media.directshow.enabled

Thank you so much! I came across this option when I was trying to diagnose the crash and I didn't have the option for "media.windows-media-foundation.enabled" in the about:config so I gave up on that.

Updating to 29.0.1 and going into the about:config, then switching "media.windows-media-foundation.enabled" and "media.directshow.enabled" fixed my crashes (so far) after a computer restart.

Thank you guys, you are amazing! I almost gave up on my favorite browser.
