I went into Firefox in safe mode by using cap locks to fix Java Plug in.

Next it says to try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. However, it doesn't say how to do that. So, I'm stuck.

I'm not well-versed in computer tech. A brief explanation would be helpful. Thanks.

JavaScript is built into Firefox (and other programs). Java is a plugin for web browsers.

hello Angelkin6, could you expand a bit on what's the problem that you're trying to fix?

You can disable hardware acceleration in Firefox here: (you need to close and restart Firefox)

I find that when trying to see a film clip video it sometimes says JavaScript error or it does nothing and won't show the video.

I have read that JavaScript is unstable, dangerous, and shouldn't be used period. Then I found this website that says there's a glitch in Firefox and it can possibly be remedied.

So I am guessing that it is not dangerous. Is that correct?

I was mistaken the error message says plug is not found. It doesn't say what plug in was not found.

It's on a PBS site. I guess I am supposed to know what plug in they're using for this site. I don't know. I also tried it on IE and it didn't work there either.

It seems at times to take a tech genius just to watch a video clip on there. Maybe I should forget it and stick to youtube which works. lol

I read that a certain Java script plug in is dangerous and unstable. Then I read on here that it is OK. Is Java Script dangerous or what?

That is likely about the Java plugin and not about JavaScript that should pose security issues in most cases.

To avoid confusion:

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

I am trying to simplify this and take one step at a time.

The Java Plug In is unstable and/or dangerous? Please answer Yes or No.

Thanks

The Java plugin has access to your complete hard drive and thus can be dangerous if you run malicious Java applets.

the-edmeister, thanks. It's clear, I think. Java Script is just that, a technical programming language. It's written into the program, Java, to make it usable.

BTW..... You guys did a GREAT JOB on the new Firefox!!! I resisted it for very long time and used an old one. I gave in when I had no choice as all the earlier Firefoxes were rendered null and void. Nice move. Anyway, it's been the smoothest transition of any Firefox upgrade I've ever had. Next time I won't be reluctant to use the new one. 8~)
