I don't know when new mail in, however I am working on computer

Example: I am working on my computer: Google or i-Photo. A friend sents an urgent mail. I get no warning, no notification. After 2 or 3 hours I stop and switch off. The day after I discover the mail: sometimes it's too late. English is not my mothertongue,sorry!
