Automatic updates persist after app.update.auto is set to false
On Firefox 82 on Ubuntu.
After dealing with the forced updates I manually disabled them, which takes a surprising amount of Googling since the setting was placed in about:config recently. However, I'm still being prompted to restart whenever an update is available.
If this can't be fixed, I'm done with Firefox - it's honestly something extremely basic and that the setting is hidden, and doesn't do anything. makes no sense.

You appear to be using Firefox from the Ubuntu repositories and this means that software update is managed by Ubuntu software management and isn't under control of Firefox.
You can install Firefox from the Mozilla server to have more control and possibly select "Check for updates but let you choose to install them".

The build you have is a third-party build from Ubuntu repositories as stated as the updates are in the package manager.
Mozilla does not provide updates to third-party Firefox builds. They only provide updates to their own Firefox builds from mozilla.org. Any update Firefox settings in Firefox are for the official builds.
