From time to time there is a little round icon that looks like a soccer ball on my screen. It moves about when I move the cursor but it doesn't track with the cursor.

How can I get rid of the thing since it seems to serve no purpose except to irritate me?

Win 10, Firefox 47.0.1

Thanks.

Hmm, I can't think of anything similar except maybe the "autoscrolling" icon. If you click on a web page (not on a link) with the middle mouse button or scroll wheel, Firefox displays a round icon with a dot in the center and up and down triangles. If you move your mouse pointer above or below the level of that icon, the page scrolls while the circle stays in the same place on your screen. The greater distance between the mouse pointer and the icon, the faster the scrolling. Is it that one?

There is a way to disable the autoscrolling feature:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options

In the left column, click Advanced. On the right side, with the "General" mini-tab active, uncheck the box for "Use autoscrolling"

If that's not it:

Does it seem to be associated with particular websites or does it appear at random? It might be helpful to see a screen shot of it. This article has tips on capturing screenshots: How do I create a screenshot of my problem? Please cut out or blur any sensitive information in the image before attaching it to your reply.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • Do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Thanks. It's the autoscroll "feature". This may help but it was so disconcerting that it became a pain in the neck. I've turned it off but one day may try again.

Thanks again.
