add-on set to update automatically but they do not

"Update add-ons automatically" is selected but plug-ins are not updating automatically. For example, I had to update the Quicktime plug-in manually.

There is also larger problem of Firefox crashing unless I open it in Safe Mode. I have now disabled more Add-ons but not tested yet. I hope that disabling add-ons solves the problem but if the troubleshooting information gives any clues about why it keeps crashing, please let me know as well.

You can only automatically update extensions that are installed in the Firefox profile folder and not extensions that are installed globally and also not plugins as those are not part of the Firefox program.
You always need to update plugins via the program that installed them or via their web page.
