Can't get into Laptop Mozilla

I created a Primary Password for the Firefox on my Laptop. I must have written it down incorrectly because Laptop Firefox doesn't recognize the Primary Password when enter it.

Since Laptop Firefox doesn't recognize my Primary Password, I am unable to log into any websites *on my Laptop*. Even if I enter the user name & password manually (vs. trying to use the saved passwords), the Laptop Firefox just asks for the Primary Password.

I am able to access my Firefox account on my Desktop PC and my phone. All three of the devices (laptop, phone, desktop) were being synced, but I turned off the sync when this problem began.

I have read on the Mozilla site that if I have forgotten the Primary Password, then I can "reset" it, however this means I will lose all of my user names and passwords.

I have also read that if I have forgotten my *Account Password*, then I can use my Recovery Key to reset it. >>Can I use my Recovery Key to reset the Laptop Firefox *Primary Password* without loss of data?

I found the place to reset the Laptop Primary Password, but did not click it because I was afraid everything would be deleted when I clicked "Reset".

>>If my Recovery Key cannot help me reset the Laptop Primary Passwor, does that mean I will lose the user names/passwords for the entire account across all of my other devices (phone, desktop PC)

>>If I Uninstall/Reinstall the Laptop Firefox App, would that eliminate the Laptop Primary Password requirement? In other words, if I did a fresh reinstall of the Firefox app on my Laptop, & then tried to log into my Laptop Firefox account, would it still ask for Primary Password?

Thank you for reading all of this. Kristin

Hi Kristin

You will not be able to use your Mozilla Account recovery keys to recover your Primary Password on Firefox.

If you have your login details previously synced to Firefox on another device (such as your phone):

  • Log into your Mozilla Account at https://accounts.firefox.com/signin
  • Remove the desktop copy of Firefox from Connected Services.
  • Reinstall a fresh copy of desktop Firefox.
  • Sign into Firefox Sync on the desktop copy of Firefox.

This should both remove the Primary Password and sync your login credentials from your other device.

Thank you, Paul! It is wonderful to be able to use Mozilla Firefox on my laptop again. I appreciate your time, expertise, and willingness to help. Kristin
