problem with update to 140.3.1 ESR from 128.14.0 ESR

Windows 11 Pro on Lenovo ThinkCentre. I switched to ESR a while back, when the regular and ESR versions coincided. All updates since then have worked fine, until now.

When I allow Firefox to update to 140.3.1esr from 128.14.0esr, then the Firefox browser no longer works at all. It comes up, but entering a URL (by typing or bookmark) does nothing and goes nowhere, so I can't use the internet at all.

I had to use Macrium Reflect to restore my system drive to an earlier time to get back on the internet, using version 128.14.0esr, which lost some recent bookmarks, etc. I have tried this twice, with the same result.

Now, a couple of sites no longer work because they say the browser isn't current.

What can I do about this? I hope I don't have to switch to another browser, because there are Firefox extensions I use all the time. However, I can't use a non-updatable browser indefinitely, because more sites won't work.

Can I fix this?

Thanks for your help, AnneF

I'm also on a Lenovo laptop but I don't think that's the issue.

I'm replying because I am on Debian Linux and have the same issue. My new/old build # is below

Unpacking firefox-esr (140.3.1esr-1~deb13u1) over (128.14.0esr-1~deb13u1)

For now I have reverted to the older build.

Note that I tried running in safe mode and same result.

When I open FF, it tries to load my previous tabs (of which there are MANY). None of the tabs load. A new tab doesn't load either.

I'm replying to this, but I don't want this to be an "Answer" as it's not a solution.

Thank you for your reply, Mark. It helps to know others have the EXACT SAME problem - and on a different OS - so I won't keep trying, thinking it's something wrong on my end. Also helps to know you have already tried safe mode. I tried to update to 140.14.0esr, actually, but since you have tried 140.14.1esr, I won't do it all over again with that one - having to restore my system drive isn't pleasant.

This link said you could contact a "support agent," but I see no way to do that. Is there no way to get a response from Firefox? I was wondering if there might be a simple fix - or if Firefox could be uninstalled and just start over (but what a pain that would be). I have installed another browser for sites that fail because the Firefox version is "old."

Obviously it's not normal for Firefox to completely ignore address bar input or bookmark clicks without explanation (such as a time-out error page or other connection error). When this happens, do internal pages work, such as Settings? You could try this to assess the health of Firefox and/or its permission to access the network:

New Profile Test

This takes about 3 minutes, plus the time to test some sites.

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Take a quick glance at the page and make a mental note of which Profile has this notation: This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted. That is your current default profile.

Click the "Create a New Profile" button, then click Next. Assign a name like Test2025, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

Firefox will switch your default profile to the new one, so click the Set as Default Profile button for your regular one to avoid an unwanted surprise at your next startup.

Scroll down to Test2025 and click its Launch profile in new browser button.

Firefox should open a new window that looks like a brand new, uncustomized installation. (Your existing Firefox window(s) should not be affected.) Please ignore any tabs enticing you to connect to a Sync account or to activate extensions found on your system to get a clean test.

Can Firefox access sites in the new profile?

When you are done with the experiment, you can close the extra window without affecting your regular Firefox profile. (Test2025 will remain available for future testing.)

Thank you so much for your comprehensive reply, jscher. I won't be able to try it today; before I try that update again, I have to do system backups & possibly re-restore my OS afterward (if it doesn't work), but when I do, I'll let you know the results. I have felt so alone with this, not having any idea what to do, or to try. Warm Regards, Anne

p.s. As well as I remember, I think other Firefox functions worked. I THINK it was just the URLs were ignored.

My suspicion is that the problem will not recur with a blank profile. Otherwise, pretty much all users would be experiencing this issue. I won't test as I have other system upgrades I have to do, but let's see what happens with Anne.

Let's say that the issue doesn't recur. There's two ways to read that..

1. Your profile is corrupt. Start over. That's the "easy" answer.

2. The issue is a combination of some code change + something in the profile. That's how I'd like the developers to look at it. My profile works perfectly in the current build. Given that I have years of stuff, including MANY open tabs, I'm not open to starting over.

I was looking at command line options to see if there was something to spit out verbose logs, but was disappointed to not find anything.

Let's stay tuned for Anne and then see what devs may find..

As a footnote to Mark's comments, if the new profile works, it indicates that something in the old profile is causing a problem, but I wouldn't throw out everything, I would try to migrate the main files a few at a time and see how much you can retain. Restore bookmarks, passwords, and data from an old Firefox profile

Thank you so much, guys. I'm grateful for your help. I hope to get to this over the weekend, and I'll post and let you know what happens. --AnneF
