can not open word docs attached to email

When I try and open a word document (its a CV), attached to an email I have received. It tries to open in word but is just stuck then nothing happens?

Can you save the attachment to your computer first and then open it?

No its just stuck with the blue opening window saying opening word, have tried saving it, the same thing happens.

OK, in that case it's a problem with Word, not with Thunderbird. The document may be damaged or malformed in some way. I don't use Word so I don't have any specialist knowledge, but I found this page to help you: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/918429
