Firefox crashes as soon as I open it. It started about 3 days ago, and has been getting progressively worse. I tried starting it in safe mode and even deleting and reinstalling, and it still crashes.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

While still in Safe Mode,

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it and select Submit.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

If you can't get Firefox to open, you will have to do this the hard way. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozillacrashreporter Open the file browser / explorer on your computer. Note: You may have to enable Show Hidden Folders / Files. Enter this in the address bar;

Windows: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted Win 7/Vista: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted Win XP/2000: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted

Mac OS: /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Crash Reports/submitted Linux: /home/<username>/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports/submitted

Copy the last 5-7 Recent File Names in the folder. Post the information in the reply box below.

It quits before I can paste.

Maybe, try having Notepad open so you can switch over to it and paste there temporarily.

If it still crashes too fast, there is this part of the support article:

If you can't open Firefox because it crashes at startup even in Safe Mode:

Press the Windows key (Windows Key) + R to call up the Run dialog.

Paste "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted" (including the quotation marks) into the dialog and click OK.

In the resulting folder will be a text file for each crash report you have submitted. In details view you can sort by date by clicking the Date Modified column heading. (You can use Alt+v to activate the View menu if needed.)

When you double-click each file, it should contain the crash report ID starting with bp- and you can paste those into a reply.

You can try to delete the safebrowsing folder that you can find in the parent location of the disk cache. See the about:cache page for the location of the disk cache.

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

(the "AppData" folder is a hidden folder)

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Wow these are very odd (comparing with other crash reports I usually see). Do you know whether Firefox is trying to restore your previous session windows and tabs or is trying to load the home page?

Focusing on the four most recent:

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/02c83285-f4aa-44a3-a6ba-2e20d2150616 - uptime 14 seconds - Firefox appears to have crashed trying to update the SafeBrowsing data it downloads from Google to check whether URLs are on the phishing/malware list

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/2a9a5e80-703f-478a-a4a6-ba3d22150616 - uptime 39 seconds - Firefox seems to have been trying to load a secure site

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/03f5898f-b368-4e6a-8b40-e15b22150616 - uptime 69 seconds - Firefox seems to have been opening a ZIP file or perhaps an extension file (.xpi) which actually is a ZIP archive

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/2e82086c-f265-4947-8a0f-fb6862150611 - uptime 6742 seconds - browsing normally?

Have you shut down and restarted Windows since this problem began? I wonder whether a shared component in memory is broken and that is why the crashes are occuring more and more rapidly (except that earliest one).

The three from June 9th-10th are similarly novel.

Some user comments on these crashes mention plugin-container.exe crashing. Are you seeing any indication of that? It's not clear from the reports (or not clear to me; I'm not an expert).

I think it's also a good idea to scan for malware in case some rogue process is attempting to inject itself into Firefox. You can supplement your regular security software with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.
