The new 25.0.1 Firefox just installed itself and in the process deleted all of my passwords, bookmarks, add-ons and settings! Thankfully I have some of the more vital passwords written down, but I am furious and frustrated!!! I had a significant collection of bookmarks I had been assembling for the past year for an upcoming move, and the loss of all that work is exasperating to say the least! The loss of the passwords is only slightly less infuriating!

Following instructions in the article on backing up Profiles I found that the bookmark folder is empty. Will going back to the previous version restore what I lost or am I really condemned to starting over from scratch? This is not the first time an update has screwed me over in some way, but it is certainly the worst!

As I wrote - the newly installed Firefox has none of my passwords or bookmarks - none! I am slowly rebuilding my password collection, and have replaced my add-ons, but my collection of bookmarks, painstakingly amassed over several months, are gone and will be difficult to recreate in full :-(

Sometimes during an upgrade Firefox will encounter a problem writing to the current settings folder and will perform a Reset. This should copy your old settings folder to the desktop under the name Old Firefox Data. Can you find such a folder?

Sorry to say no such luck :-(

Could the older settings be in a second profile folder parallel to your current folder? To view your profile folder(s), you can copy and paste this into Start > search box or into the address bar of a Windows Explorer window:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Are there any other default profiles present as there might have been a problem with the profiles.ini files that has caused Firefox to create a new default profile?

Thank you for the links - I followed the instructions and went hunting to see if maybe the old profile was still out there hiding somewhere. There were, in fact, two folders, an older and a new. Sadly the older folder dating from my computer crash/recovery back in May contains only the new data from the recent update - not a trace of my old data seems to have survived. Clearly I need to learn more so I can make appropriate backups of my profile if (IF) I continue using Firefox. Speaking of backups - my computer does monthly backups of files and settings - is there any article that can tell me how to recover this info from my backup drive if it is there?

If you have include files in the location where Firefox stores its profiles then you can check for the files that you to restore.

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Note that the "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and Windows 7 and later versions is a hidden folder.
