The action of clicking e.g. a country in the drop down country list at http://www.census.gov/population/international/data/idb/informationGateway.php has no affect on the list, but actually clicks the original screen behind it. This is true of several websites.

Sounds like taking transparency to the extreme (as if transparency was not already an extreme hindrance).

Do you have the same problem in other application, other browsers.

Do you have the same problem on other pages.

I would suggest clearing your cache and then restarting Firefox, if not Windows itself.

But first do these work arounds work or does the transparency hole make them fail as well.

  1. Use Tab or Shift+Tab to get to next/previous link, input box, or drop down selection box
  2. Key in the first letter "H" to get to Haiti , or sometimes better do scroll down by typing the next letter after the first letter of the name you actually want.
  3. Use of the cursor keys (up and down)
  4. "Enter" or click once country is selected

Thanks for your response. The same problem doesn't occur with IE, thus I know it is a Firefox issue. Your work arounds do work so yes, I can cursor keys arrow down/up to move highlight, then return to select/action.

If I do use the mouse, it acts upon the page "underneath" the drop down box as thought the latter were invisible.

But, I'm wedded to my mouse and hate to have things that don't work, especially as that often fortells of other problems further along.

I will try your other suggestions, but am starting to think I need to repair or uninstall and resinstall Firefox.

I don't know which of the two solutions has done the trick, but problem solved. Thanks.
