Windows XP, click on Help, About Firefox, Check for updates. They download. Then I click on Apply update. A window appears saying "updater.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." Then I may choose whether to send the error report.

There has been no update. It will not install.

Why does this happen? The only way I can get updates from Firefox is to go to Mozilla.com and download.

I tried the troubleshooting tips in Firefox Help and nothing worked.

There hasn't been an update for Firefox 4.0 yet, it was just released like a week and a half ago.

I should have explained that this has been going on for a long time. When I first installed Firefox several years ago their updates installed fine. Then they no longer would install, starting in July 2007 when they downloaded Firefox 2.0.0.4. After they installed that, Firefox would not even open, and I got an error message. I had to uninstall and reinstall. I figured out over time that I would have to go to their website and download the updates myself, each time they announced that an update needed to be installed. It would then install fine. And Firefox would open as it should. This has been the case for a long time.

So it does work out doing it this way. It is something of a nuisance, and it would be nice if the updates worked smoothly and automatically, as they used to.

I thought this might be some problem others users have had and would know how to fix it.

Thank you.
