Problem after closing Yahoo email account
I have recently closed my yahoo mail account, removed all traces from Thunderbird, but when I start Thunderbird, after a few seconds, I get a Yahoo sign in screen over the top of Thunderbird

It's (entirely) possible that Yahoo installed something, that detects when Tbird is launched & flashes their login. Did you have a Yahoo acct, separate from using Tbird? They want you to login their site, even for email. Unless you allow remote content for mail from them (or all email, by default, overriding Tbird's settings), they can't serve you ads thru Tbird.
If that's the case, you'll have to get help how to uninstall Yahoo's software.

Please access the Config Editor and search there for yahoo. Is there anything listed there? Does it contain ldap2 in the name?
The most recent copy of the prefs.js file has the following lines containing the text "yahoo" -
user_pref("ldap_2.servers.Contacts.carddav.url", https://carddav.address.yahoo.com/dav/turleyfrankturley/Contacts/"); user_pref("ldap_2.servers.Contacts.carddav.username", "turleyfrankturley@yahoo.co.uk"); user_pref("mail.server.server8.directory", "C:\\Users\\Frank Turley\\AppData\\Roaming\\Thunderbird\\Profiles\\b6q69lqb.default\\ImapMail\\imap.mail.yahoo-1.com"); user_pref("mail.server.server8.directory-rel", "[ProfD]ImapMail/imap.mail.yahoo-1.com"); user_pref("mail.server.server8.hostname", "imap.mail.yahoo.com"); user_pref("mail.server.server8.userName", "turleyfrankturley@yahoo.co.uk"); user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp4.description", "Yahoo! The file has a note that it should not be edited, so I didn't, but I suspect this file may contain the source of my problem.
I found the following instances of "yahoo" -

I did not edit the file as per the comment at the top of the file, but I suspect this may be the source of my problem.

Most certainly
Is it safe to use the dustbin icon to remove the yahoo items in the config editor?
I used the config editor to remove the items relevant to yahoo -
ldap_2.servers.contacts mailserver.server8 mail.smptserver.smpt4 mail.smptserver.smpt7
and the yahoo reference in privacy.trackingprotection.
I hope this will work - thank you to those who gave me advice
